About the National Craft Championships

Craft trainees and apprentices from across the country travel each year to compete for top honors in their chosen craft. For the competitors, the National Craft Championships allows them to demonstrate their superior skills, training and safe work practices. For the training sponsors, employers and ABC chapters, the NCC demonstrates a staunch commitment to the career path the construction industry offers.

The NCC is planned and conducted by ABC’s National Craft Championships Committee. This committee consists of contractor representatives and ABC chapter and national staff.

Two Days, 15 Competitions, 13 Crafts
Each competition consists of a written exam, typically based on the Contren® Learning Series curricula developed by the NCCER. The written exam accounts for 25 percent of the total score. Held on the second day, competitors are tested on their skills during a six hour project. This Practical Performance Test accounts for 75 percent of the total score.

In 2018, the National Craft Championships presents competitions in the following crafts:
  • Carpentry: Residential-Commercial
  • Electrical: Commercial-Industrial
  • Electrical: Residential-Commercial

NCC Team Competition
Five journey-level professionals (previous individual competition medalists can compete) will work in teams to complete a series of craft-specific tasks focused on electrical, pipefitting, millwright, carpentry and insulation in a six-hour period. The competition will demonstrate craft inter-dependency and teamwork; simulate working conditions where planning is critical to success; and highlight individual leadership skills as the project is assembled.

The teams will be judged based on the following criteria:
  • Practical evaluation by subject matter experts
  • 75% of the team's overall scores will be based on evaluations in safety (individual and team), individual craft mastery, teamwork and leadership.
  • 25% of the team’s score will be based on their collective individual scores in a craft-specific assessment.
Awards and Recognition
The NCC typically awards first, second and third place in each craft competition. (First, second and third place Team competitors will be awarded medals only; no cash prizes.) Winners also may receive tools and gifts from NCC sponsors.
  • First Place: Gold Medal and $750
  • Second Place: Silver Medal and $500
  • Third Place: Bronze Medal and $350
